Candlelit Dinner

However kindly we revise
Our answers, softening; or change
The question, not to recognize
Its awful power to estrange,

The nearly honest answers fail.
The under-question thus unmasked
Draws up a chair. A sickly-pale,
Unwelcome visitant, unasked.
